Sunday Picture Post 8 / Tip: Eat & Sleep
For The Sunday Picture Post, we are going to flip upside-down the saying: “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Thousands of words are great if you are writing a novel, but if you are writing a screenplay, you need to do the opposite and be as concise as possible.
Each Sunday I will post a picture. For your screenwriting practice in brevity, in the comments section, please post one or all of the following:
- 1 word describing the theme, mood, or scene
- 1 sentence to describe the scene
- A pitch to sell the entire movie
The more colorful and creative you are, the better! Use any genre.
A good screenwriter is laconic, using a few words to say a lot.
SCREENWRITING TIP OF THE DAY: EAT & SLEEP
This is going to be one of those “do as I say, not as I do” advice bits.
Exhausted and starving at the time of writing this post, having eaten a bowl of pea soup and a fruit shake today, I can only muster enough brain power to tell you to eat 3 healthy meals a day and to get at least 6 hours of sleep so you don’t get stuck reading the same sentence 50 times, like I am write now. (Oops, I mean, right now.) Lack of food and rest will give you a scuttle brain, resulting in loss of productivity and creativity.

Got something to say?

Horror
When darkness covers the skies, 068677 comes alive, hunting for it’s prey.
I understand what you mean about eat and sleep. It’s not just for screenwriting but for everything. I haven’t been getting much sleep in the past few nights because I’m too excited to go to NYC for a couple screenings, press roundtable with the director and actors, and hopefully a 1-on-1 interview.
SIZZLING P — Oooooh, I am so excited for you to go to NYC! Wish I was doing that right now.
I’m going to jump in on this Sunday’s Picture Post:
– Apocalyptic
– A burning hot dark sky hovers over abandoned apartments and vehicles that line the streets of every city in the world; not a living thing persists.
– Human-like visitors come to Earth to find proof of life, yet no life exists. Shirwa heads his team to solve the mystery of the abandoned planet.
Abandon
In the dark gloom of first light, as the ominous grey bus inched away from the curb, her head lowered beneath her cap, she knew this was the moment where it would all change, it was now or never.
Trapped in grit of the big city, kept down by the pushers and thugs, she longed for something more.
Optimism
It was another gloomy day, not unlike the other days that have passed since he’d been gone. Today, however would be different, even the cold and rain would not get her down. He had phoned earlier. He was coming home.
A young couple, kept apart by a series of misfortunes, finally sort out things so that they can finally face life’s struggles, together instead of apart.
A mousy woman boards a bus in a nondescript town to begin a journey to fulfill her mother’s promise to a stranger many years ago. A journey that could only enlighten her and bring new meaning to the phrase “The Kindness of Strangers”.
NANU & PATTY — My favorite thing that has come out of doing the Sunday Picture Posts is how everyone sees something different.
Thank you everyone who participates in this. It is a true joy for me to read these and also to watch your quick-pitching and writing talents improve.
I think that was the best thing about this one…. it was so dark, it made it more interesting and challenging to me to find the light. lol, I love games, this has become a new fave. I’m Reel Ninja’s wife… he turned me on to your site.
NANU — *smiling* Sounds like a good title: The Ninja’s Wife.
Yeah and she can slice up people really good too :) I am slacking on the Sunday post but I will catch up soon.
REEL NINJA — Slicing?! Aaaaah! Must be quite the household! Forget Mr. & Mrs. Smith, we have to worry about Mr. & Mrs. Lee.
Incurable
Panic ensues, when Russian towns people are suddenly inexplicably stricken with a rare condition known as “Brittle Bone Disease,” which cause their bones to break and fracture for no apparent reason, which in turn has also caused people to go deaf. A “visitor” tells everyone that a bus will take them to an underground medical facility–question is, do they want to help and do they have the cure, or is maybe something more sinister behind the medical facility?
JAN — Oooooh, dark and twisted!
I saw a real likeness of this truck today, which eerily enough was a dark and dreary day, at least the morning was. Anywho, I immediately thought of you and this post. :) It’s so funny how things stay with you… or they do with me… I have a wicked memory, and recall can be so powerful at times. I was instantly creeped out when this truck cruised by me today… as my thoughts returned to the plotlines posted by your followers ;)
hope you’re well. RNW
Nanu — Oooooh, eerie and intriguing!
